President's Budget Lifts Restrictions on DC Abortions

President's Budget Lifts Restrictions on DC Abortions
On April 10 President Obama lifted restrictions on Washington, D.C.’s use of local funds to provide insurance coverage for abortion to low-income women and for easing restrictions on abortion coverage for some Peace Corps volunteers, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) said in a statement. However, NLIRH expressed disappointment that the President’s budget retains the harmful Hyde Amendment, a 40-year-old policy that withholds coverage for abortion for women enrolled in Medicaid.

BEST bus turns turtle, 19 injured

BEST bus turns turtle, 19 injured

A BEST bus turned turtle after a dumper rammed into it while trying to overtake it on the Western Express Highway near Santacruz Airport junction, Vile Parle (east) at 12 noon yesterday.

Nineteen passengers, including the bus driver and conductor, were injured in the accident and rushed to VN Desai Municipal Hospital in Santacruz (east). Five of them were admitted to the hospital, while the rest were discharged.

The bus fell on the northbound side of the highway affecting the traffic moving towards Andheri. Within half an hour, the traffic police and local residents managed to rescue the victims. However, traffic came to a stand-still for almost an hour, as a BMC hoarding caught fire near the accident spot. To add to that, the traffic police was under the pressure of clearing the road for the President’s entourage to pass at 3 pm.
Shashikant Talegaonkar, senior police inspector from Vile Parle police station, said, “The dumper rammed into the bus twice while trying to overtake it. The bus driver lost control and the bus toppled on to the other side of the road. Kishan Vishwanath Kamble (24), the driver of the dumper, has been taken into police custody.”Kamble will be produced in the
court today.
Raju Sherwegar, a 72-year-old commuter was sitting on the first seat next to the driver when the accident occurred. “The driver of the dumper was driving recklessly. The bus driver should have been careful too. People should be careful while driving on the highway,” said Sherwegar, who has sustained blunt injuries on his back and chest and is under observation in the ICU.
The bus conductor, Vishwas Sawant (52), has injured his right hand and has sustained minor injuries on his head. “The bus fell on its right side. If the bus would have toppled on the left, it would have fallen off the bridge and the casualties would have increased,” added Sawant.
Meanwhile, the bus driver, Sahebrao Chikne (58) has hurt his elbow and has sustained blunt injuries on his hip, abdomen and back. “The dumper tried to overtake the bus from the left. While overtaking, it hit the bus close to the front entrance due to which the bus climbed on the divider. When the dumper hit the bus the second time, the bus toppled and fell on its right,” said Chikne.
A doctor from the hospital, on condition of anonymity, said, “None of the passengers admitted are serious.”

Great short sportsmen of all time

Great short sportsmen of all time

Diego Maradona

Being short in height has never been a disadvantage and histroy bears testimony to this fact. Napoleon Bonaparte-the French military general is chiefly remembered for two things-as a world conqueror and as the short General. There are plenty such examples in history. Well, our sportspersons are also no less-From Diego Maradona to Sachin Tendulkar-these sportstars have proved that being short is actually an advantage rather than disadvantage. DC Online lists out a few such great sportstars in random order.

Chiranjivi to light up Karnataka poll campign

Chiranjivi to light up Karnataka poll campign

Apr 6, 2013, 07.20PM IST TNNBV Shiva Shankar ]

HYDERABAD: Union tourism minister for state Chranjivi is all set to spearhead the Congress campaign in AP border area and Bangalore for Karnataka assembly polls even as AP leaders including Raghuvira Reddy, Panabaka Lakshmi, Purandareswari, and Mohammed Azaruddin would lead separate campaigns across Karnataka.

As the election scene is hotting up for the May 5 polls, Andhra Pradesh leaders are in the fore front of the Congress campaign management. Rajyasabaha MP V Hanumantha Rao is camping in Bangalore as he is the AICC secretary in-charge of Karnataka affairs. He is over viewing the poll strategy to mobiles Telugu speaking voters in Karnataka who are dominant in several assembly segments particularly in north, south, and central parts of the state.

"Apart from Hydrerabad-Karnataka which was a part of Nizam province, the border districts in Telangana and Rayalaseema have substantial Telugu votes. While Language is the hook, community factor would play a key role. Keeping all this in mind, we are organizing campaign rallies led by Andhra Pradesh leaders, and Chiranjivi is going to spearhead," said Hanumantha Rao.

Apart from his fan clubs spread across the border areas and Bangalore coming handy for him, Chiranjivi is hoped to strike a chord with his Kapu community voters who are quite sizeable in the districts of Kolar, Chikkabalalpur, Doddabalalpur, Raichur, and Bellary which are closer to Ananathpur and Kurnool.

He is expected to tour across these districts, while his mega star appeal is hoped to work in the Telangana border districts of Gulbarga, Bidar, and parts of Raichur. Even his popularity as a film star is quite significant in the cities of Bangalore and Mysore where he is expected to campaign.

The Congress campaign managers are planning to rope in the party leaders with Hindi film background along with Chiranjivi as the Bollywood enjoys a significant market share in Bangalore, coastal Karnataka and North Karnataka.

They have enlisted Raj Babbar for campaigning in Bangalore. Similarly, Riteish Deshmukh will woo voters in districts bordering Karnataka and Maharashtra and in Bangalore as well. Riteish is a popular star in Karnataka not only because of his films, but also in view of the Celebrity Cricket League, which has dominated the south film industry.

This region-specific campaigning by film stars and cricketers is the brainchild of Congress Campaign Committee Chairperson Veeranna Mattikatti. "Our campaigning will be audience specific. We will talk to the voters through their favourite personalities," he pointed out.

Revenue minister Raghuvira Reddy is expected to mobilise Yadav votes in the districts of Tumkur, Chitradurga, and Kolar. As he is fluent in Kannada, Raghuvira Reddy easily connects with the Karnataka voters as his earlier constituency Madakashira is closer to Tumkur, and he runs chain of hotels in Bangalore and Mysore.

"It is nothing new that I take part in Karnataka election campaign for the Congress. I have been doing this from 1989. This time around we have started the ground works already and the real campaign starts once the nomination filing process ends on April 17," said Raghuvira Reddy.

As he said the campaign schedule is yet to be charted out, he and Chiranjivi are expected to embark on the poll tour after April 20. Panabaka Lakshmi and Purandareswari would join them in Rayalaseem border areas and would campaign between April and May 1 before the public canvas ends on May 3.

The Congress has another strong campaigner in cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin. This time, the Congress will be using him to woo Minority votes in Hyderabad-Karnataka region and Bangalore.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Vs Pune Warriors

5 Apr 2013 : PWI vs SRH : SRH won by 22 runs

5 Apr 2013 : PWI vs SRH : SRH won by 22 runs

Chasing 127 to win, the PW collapsed to 104 in 18.5 overs as Dale Steyn spewed fire to claim three wickets in his last over.
The visitors lost their last six wickets in 18 deliveries for 21 runs, to go down in the low-scoring match. Perera with his all-round performance (two wickets and 30 runs), Dale Steyn (3 for 11) and Amit Mishra (three for 19) played key role in Sunrisers’ win.
The visitors made a slow and cautious start before Robin Uthappa opened up in the sixth over to hoist Ishant Sharma for a six over long-off.
This was followed by two successive boundaries in the next over off Perera. The opener, however, fell in the same over as he tried to open the face of the bat and ended up giving a simple catch behind the wicket.
Perera, who top scored for Sunrisers, struck for the second time in his next over, having Samuels caught at first slip by Cameron White.
PW were reduced to 42 for two in the ninth over. Yuvraj Singh had a very brief stay at the crease, lasting for just four deliveries. He was beaten to a beauty by Amit Mishra only to be stumped by Parthiv Patel. Pandey was the next to go caught by White off Mishra.
The opener played 29 balls for his 15. PW were struggling at 50 for four in 12th over. Ross Taylor and Abhishek Nayar tried to rebuild the inning. They added 33 runs off 27 deliveries before Mishra had Nayar caught at extra cover to finish with 19 for three in his four overs.
Local boy Ashish Reddy gave a vital breakthrough in the next over as Taylor was clean bowled trying to go for a big hit. Mitch Marsh tried to keep his team in the hunt by hoisting Ashish Reddy for a huge six but was unlucky to be run out when skipper Angelo Mathew played a straight shot, touching the bowler’s hand.
Earlier, electing to field after winning the toss, PW bowled with discipline to restrict the hosts.
Making its debut in the IPL, the new Hyderabad franchise failed to post a huge score as their batsmen struggled against some fine bowling by Ashok Dinda, Bhuvaneswar Kumar and Rahul Sharma.
Perera top scored for the home team with 30 off 18 balls. He hit three boundaries and the only six of the inning. Dinda was the most successful bowler for PW, claiming two wickets for 39 in his four overs.
Buvaneswar Kumar conceded only 17 runs in his four overs and claimed one wicket. Rahul Sharma was also impressive with the figures of 4-0-21-1. Yuvraj Singh bagged one wicket for eight runs in his two overs.
Sameuls also got one wicket. Earlier, Parthiv Patel and Akshath Reddy made a cautious start, adding 32 runs off 5.2 overs before Ashok Dina gave Pune Warriors the first breakthrough.
It was Patel who tried to give some momentum in the sixth year by hitting Smauel for two boundaries.
However, the left hander did not last as he tried to hit Dinda Sangakkara joined Reddy to steady the innings but the captain failed to play a big inning.
The Sri Lankan, who played a couple of delightful boundaries, was beaten in flight by Rahul Sharma to be cleaned bowled in the 10th over of the inning. The hosts lost two more wickets in the next five overs with the addition of 27 runs.
Local boy Akshath Reddy (27 off 30 balls) was cleaned up by Yuvraj Singh to reduce Sunrisers to 72 for three. Cameron White (10 off 18) also failed to impress. It was some big hitting by Perera in the slog overs which helped the team to reach to a respectable total.
