New Zealand beat West Indies for series win
Bridgetown: New Zealand`s perseverance with their frontline bowlers paid
off eventually as the visitors completed a 53-run victory over the West
Indies in the last hour of the third and final Test match at Kensington
Oval in Barbados on Monday.
Despite being held up by a 77-run eighth-wicket partnership between debutant Jason Holder and Shane Shillingford, the Black Caps finished off the job with Trent Boult, who did the early damage in the morning, returning with the second new ball to trap last man Jerome Taylor leg-before and dismiss the home side for 254.
Boult, fellow-seamer Tim Southee and off-spinner Mark Craig took three wickets each to lead the New Zealand effort which gave them the match and the series 2-1, only their second Test win at Kensington Oval and second Test series triumph in the Caribbean.
"We`re really thrilled with pulling off this series win," said New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum at the end of the match. "It was tough cricket all the way through so we`ll enjoy this moment."
New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson, who scored 161 not out in the second innings, took the honours as "Man of the Match" and "Man of the Series".
Holder, who topscored with 52, and Shillingford (30 not out), gave the West Indies a slim hope of saving the match as they defied the opposition for almost two hours in a 77-run stand. Before their intervention, all seemed set for a swift finish when the regional side slumped to 144 for seven just before tea.
Any hopes the West Indies harboured of an improbable victory had disappeared in the afternoon with the demise of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Darren Bravo, the two key middle-order batsmen who resumed after the lunch interval with the responsibility resting on their shoulders of leading the home side out of the early trouble.
Craig had Chanderpaul stumped for 25, the first time in his 20-year Test career, comprising 156 matches and 266 innings, that he had been stumped. Bravo got to 40 put departed in exactly the same manner of his first innings dismissal, slicing a drive to Kane Williamson at gully.
In the first innings, the successful bowler was Neil Wagner. This time though Southee was the celebrating bowler. He had also removed West Indies captain Denesh Ramdin, who got to 29 before edging a catch to Ross Taylor at first slip.
"One of the major problems for us in this match was the inability to knock over the New Zealand lower-order," said Ramdin. "In the batting department, those who got starts for us could have pushed on, but it didn`t happen."
McCullum`s declaration just before the start of play, setting the West Indies 308 to win, lay down the challenge to his bowlers to deliver victory and they responded almost immediately.
Boult struck the first two blows. Kraigg Braithwaite misjudged the line of an inswinging delivery and had his off-stump knocked back, while new batsman Kirk Edwards lived a charmed life before edging into the safe hands of Taylor at first slip.
Chris Gayle, who has been troubled by a back injury and struggled to find his best form in the series, was next to go, bowled for 11 off the inside-edge as he aimed a big drive at Southee to reduce the West Indies to 31 for three.

Buried For 60 Hours: 3 More Rescued From Chennai Building Collapse Site
Chennai:
Three people were rescued today after 60 hours under the
debris of an 11-storey building in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, which collapsed
on Saturday. In three days, the number of dead has risen to 26 and some
20 are believed to be trapped.
26 people have been rescued till now. Workers continue to drill holes and clear the rubble from the site, where faint cries for help could be heard even till yesterday.
Those pulled out alive this morning are Mahesh, 23, and Anasuya, 30, from Andhra Pradesh and 27-year-old Senthil from Tamil Nadu's Madurai district.
Most of those in the building when it collapsed were construction workers from Andhra Pradesh and the northern states. Many were in the building to collect their wages.
"Clearing the debris is a huge challenge. We hope to save more lives," a senior cop told NDTV.
On Sunday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said there were 72 construction workers in the building when it collapsed. She said the building appeared to have serious structural defects and had not adhered to the approved plans.
Five people, including the promoters and engineers of the building, have been arrested and charged with violations.
A National Disaster Response Force team has been leading rescue work using gas cutters, iron rods and shovels after cranes lifted concrete blocks to get to the survivors.
On Saturday, 11 people died in Delhi when a 50-year-old four-storey building collapsed.
In April last year, 74 people were killed when an eight-storey building being constructed illegally in the Mumbai suburb of Thane in western Maharashtra had collapsed.

New Delhi: Two of the world`s heavyweights, France and Germany are set for an intense high octane clash after securing victories in their last 16 knock-out stage on Monday.
French heroics were witnessed as they overcame a resolute Nigeria 2-0 after both goals came in the last 11 minutes that saw Didier Deschamp`s side through. On the other hand Germany took two hours of gruelling session to overcome Algeria 2-1. Two European powerhouses are now pitted against each other in the quarter-finals and well there are no favourites in this clash as both teams are stupendous in their own ways.
France have continued their free flowing football under Deschamps and have looked like a force who mean business here in Brazil. The likes of Karim Benzema, Oliver Giroud, Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba have risen to the occasion for the 1998 world champions. France are strong in midfield and their defence too have stood up to the task so far.
In the match on Monday, France couldn`t quite dominate the proceedings as Nigeria looked a notch above in large parts of the match. But good teams grind out results and similar to Netherlands, France took it late to eke out a win. This French side has a host of stars and is also filled with young talent that makes them look fearless.
On the other hand lies Germany who are touted as one of the favourites alongside Brazil and Argentina to lift the title. Even after missing out on several star players due to injury, the German side boasts of a team that looks lethal. Such is their depth! Germany qualified for their 17th quarter-final stage in World Cups, and that shows how big a household name they are.
Germany pipped Algeria after Manuel Neuer heroics that saw them overcome a good Algeria side. The Bayern Munich stopper excelled for his side who looked vulnerable in most parts of the game. This World Cup has witnessed some small nation teams rise up to the occasion so far and Algeria was no exception. It was always going to be a good match with plenty of chances and Algeria missed a series of them before Premier League stars, Andre Schurrle and Mesut Ozil sealed a laboured win for Joachem Loew`s side.
The Germans are expected to win big every match but even Loew acknowledged the fact that in World Cups no games are a stroll in the park and rightly so. With the climate in Brazil making life difficult for European teams, the survival of the fittest between the two powerhouses will see them get through in the blockbuster Friday show.
There will be a promise in attack with galore of chances as key decisions in small areas with tactical brilliance will be the main showcase between them. For fans and neutrals alike this show shouldn`t be missed at any cost!

President's Budget Lifts Restrictions on DC Abortions
On April 10 President Obama lifted restrictions on Washington, D.C.’s use of local funds to provide insurance coverage for abortion to low-income women and for easing restrictions on abortion coverage for some Peace Corps volunteers, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) said in a statement. However, NLIRH expressed disappointment that the President’s budget retains the harmful Hyde Amendment, a 40-year-old policy that withholds coverage for abortion for women enrolled in Medicaid.
